Nikiwe Dlova is a South African creative hair artist who started hair culture platform, OWNURCROWN. Hakeem Adam is a multidisciplinary artist from Ghana with interests in photography, film and storytelling.
In October 2018, both creatives took part in the ColabNowNow residency put together by Maputo Fast Forward & British Council in Mozambique to connect the creative communities of Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK.
what inspired this shoot?
Nikiwe Dlova was looking at the history and place of hair art in various African cultures to create a piece that celebrates this heritage of hair in African cultures. Hakeem then photographed her with the final pieces for publicity for the group exhibition we had during the residency.
Although they were all working on our individual projects this project inspired collaboration between artists from East Africa, West Africa, Southern Africa and the UK for over ten days.
