#EndSARS -THE PROTEST: See how Nigerian Youths stand still for the disbandment of SARS.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which is a unit of the Nigerian Police Force tasked with dealing with crimes involving armed robbery, kidnapping, and the use of firearms, has been the bane of Nigerian youths for several years now. Through several acts of undue harassment, unlawful detention, extortion, kidnapping, theft and murder, they have constantly threatened the safety and lives of Nigerian citizens, especially the youths.

The Nigerian citizens have called for a reform of the SARS unit multiple times. The government in 2017, 2018 and 2019 released statements which said that they would either “reform” the SARS unit or stop them from patrolling the streets of Nigeria. However, these officials go “underground” for a while and resurface once again to deprive the Nigerian citizens of their right to dignity and at certain times, their right to life.

As a result of the consistent reoccurrence of the menace caused by the SARS unit, the Nigerian youths have conducted multiple coordinated protests around the country to call for the END and complete disbandment of the SARS unit.

The protests, which were led by Nigerian youths eager for the disbandment of the SARS unit, began on Thursday 8th October 2020 and has gone on for 3 days with celebrities actively involved in protests at Lekki, Alausa and other major areas in Nigeria. The protests have spread to other cities of the world such as Toronto and London, and have also gained attention from international media houses such as CNN, BBC and AlJazeera.
