In this interview, JNino dives deep into the sounds that shaped his musical identity, and how he is aiming to connect with listeners on a personal level through emotive and authentic expression with “Awoken”.
JNino wants listeners to walk away with a new perspective or feeling that music has the power to move and transform.
With new music coming this Friday, February 28th, be sure to keep an eye out for this highly anticipated release. Jnino’s work continues to push the boundaries of what modern R&B can be, and Awoken promises to be a project worth experiencing.
Can you talk a bit about the process of creating your recently announced EP “Awoken”?
The songs are a compilation of music I made in university and just after uni. They came about as I got deeper into meditation and finding friends with the same interests. I produced most of the tracks. and one thing they all share is that the tracks stem from conversations with friends about African spirituality and God.
How did you approach the track list for this EP?
I wanted the song arrangement to tell a story. The track list tells a story of self-discovery and tuning out the fast-paced world, encouraging us to find our own rhythm and, in turn, create harmony within it. The first track, Ubuntu, sets the tone, as the word itself comes from the Nguni Bantu languages and means ‘I am because we are,’ emphasizing the connection between individuality and community.
What message or themes are you hoping to explore with this EP?
I want listeners to tap into themselves. Showing parts of myself, hoping it inspires listeners to tap into themselves. Also, for people to tap into their African essences. That is what inspired the production styles and the visuals.
How would you say “Awoken” compares to your previous releases?
Awoken is a cohesive exploration of themes I’ve touched on in Manifest Me and Conscious Baddie, where I fully embrace my ‘Africanness.’ Artistically, I’m operating from a place of peace and acceptance, and I feel my vision for myself becoming clearer. This EP reflects that clarity. The inspiration behind Awoken is the idea of awakening to the true power within us, because when we recognize that power, the forces that control us begin to lose their grip. That’s when we can truly operate from a place of love
How would you describe the genre influences on this EP?
I would say it is very R&B inspired but coming from a place of African roots. From the artists I would say are D’Angelo, Willow, Parliament Funkadelic, Tim Lyre and Oumou Sangare.
I’m hoping with this new Ep; I can allow me to keep building a strong fan base and connect with my people and keep growing. For my supporters hope it brings them peace and introspection. Also, it is well crafted and that is one feedback I hope my listener’s get.
As the EP drops, do you have any final thoughts or messages you’d like to share with your fans who’ve supported you throughout this journey?
ORUN LA WA!! Appreciate each and everyone that takes time to listen and come out to the shows. Love you all!
In conclusion, Jnino’s journey is one of continuous growth and creativity, and Awoken is just the beginning of what’s to come. Keep your ears ready for the soulful sound that will soon captivate listeners everywhere!
