New Music Mondays: Joey B, Kiienka And More

This past weekend held a lot of great new music for us. Here’s a quick roundup of some of our favorite sounds from around Africa.

Joey B: Lava Feels

The Ghana native released a 9-track project on Friday, titled Lava Feels. On this project, which he describes as “not an EP, not an album, not a mixtape. just a collection of songs”, Joey B undertakes sonic experimentation — toying around with subtle 808s and different keys, much to good effect. With a tracklist that boasts appearances like Lagos alté scene forerunners Santi and Odunsi, singer RJZ as well as the legendary Sarkodie, this collection of songs will surely serve as an ample sonic feast to its listeners. Kiienka: Spaceman 2.0

Kiienka returns with the second installment of his Spaceman series, titled Spaceman 2.0. The project was met with a large buzz on social media, owing to the quality of the music put on show. On the project, Kiienka displays an improved knowledge and mastery of his craft alongside his brother and Dolphn Radio co-founder, Veen. Together, they are able to present a sonically adequate EP, heavily laced with psychedelic synths and mosh-inducing 808s characteristic of the Nigerian trap scene. WurlD: WAYO (KPE LE WU)

Blue-haired magician WurlD releases another single off his eagerly anticipated AFROSOUL project, titled “WAYO (KPE LE WU)”. On this song, WurlD does what he knows best, singing his heart out with lyrics about love and submission to it. Over Kel-P’s production, he sings, “Tell me make I jump, I go jump, anything for you”. If WurlD’s success over the past year is anything to go by, we can expect another solid showing on his new project. Listen to it below:

KiDi: Blue

Ghanaian singer KiDi’s Blue EP went number 1 on the Apple Music charts this weekend, above Joey B’s Lava Feels, and it’s only right that we tell you about it. KiDi sings playfully about love over subtle instrumentals, whilst showing off a good vocal range. He gets a thumbs up from us this week, and you can stream Blue below:
