OTEX is a versatile and multi-genre artist who seamlessly intertwines the contrasting themes of calm and rage in his music.
Born in Auchi, OTEX attributes his love for music and creation to his family’s record store, which laid the foundation for his musical journey. His hybrid genre style sees him effortlessly transitioning from hip-hop to Afrobeat, dancehall, and reggae.
OTEX draws inspiration from iconic figures such as Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Majek Fashek, Jay-Z, Kanye West, 2Pac Shakur, Buju Banton, 2face Idibia, Sir Alhaji Waziri Oshomah JP, Sir Victor Uwaifo, and Joker Boy.
His debut EP, “Set the Tune,” is a 5-track composition that explores a wide range of genres, including Afrobeats, reggae, jazz, dancehall, hip-hop, and street pop. This diverse musical journey showcases OTEX’s ability to blend different styles seamlessly, offering listeners a rich and varied auditory experience. Each track on the EP reflects his unique sound and artistic versatility, making “Set the Tune” a compelling introduction to his musical prowess.
On “Born Winner,” the introductory track of his debut EP, OTEX vividly describes how he wishes to be perceived. This song serves as the first impression for many listeners encountering his work for the first time. He aims to leave a lasting impact by maintaining his originality and hoping it resonates with the audience without trying to do too much.
If asked to narrate or give a brief summary of the “Set the Tune” EP, “Born Winner” would be the track of reference. It encapsulates the essence of the EP, highlighting OTEX’s determination, authenticity, and the diverse musical influences that define his sound.
“Wicked,” featuring Blueblood, is an Afrobeat core track that delves into the themes of love and admiration. What is an Afrobeat track without lyrics that depict a promise to marry? This song includes just that, with lyrics featuring a man recounting events at a lively party and expressing his helplessness in the face of a woman’s overwhelming beauty. The infectious rhythms and heartfelt lyrics capture the essence of Afrobeat while telling a relatable and captivating story of attraction and commitment.
“Moments” features guest vocals from Kentimusic, blending dancehall and folklore elements. The song celebrates the realization of living in the times and moments you once prayed for, serving as a heartfelt song of appreciation. Personally, it’s my favorite track on the album, with the impeccable feature from Kentimusic, who shines brilliantly. The track encourages living in the present, as the lyrics emphasize, “live in the moment, do what you want to do.”
“Lemon Honey,” the final song on the album, is Afrobeat-inspired. The emotive vocal balance that Kentimusic brings to the composition is unmistakable. The guitar’s stringy appeal complements the emotional vulnerability as the singer declares love with the heartfelt line, “may God bless the day I met you.”
This track beautifully balances Afrobeat rhythms with a dancehall mix, showcasing OTEX’s impressive ability to blend genres. Although this is OTEX’s first body of work, it is remarkably well-crafted and leaves a lasting impression.
