Harvest of Skulls revisits the genocide that took the lives of over a million people. Waberi places this short, intricate novel in 1998 Rwanda, four years after the genocide, weaving horrific memories and allusions to the atrocity into stories of dealing with the trauma. Divided into “Fictions” and “Stories,” the book is broadly categorized as fiction but maintains a heavy autobiographical bent; critically holding the terrible events to the light and demanding that it be seen.

The book follows the story of the life of a Congolese orphan. Alain Mabanckou’s Black Moses is the story of the life of a Congolese orphan named Moses. His full name is Tokumisa Nzambe po Mose yamoyindo abotami namboka ya Bakoko, which means “Thanks be to God, the black Moses is born on the earth of our ancestors” in Lingala. The story is one of wit and change as Moses is thrown about by the everchanging waves of life and a newly socialist Congo.
