How do you know when you’re in love? This is the question that buzzing Nigerian singer/rapper SGaWD finds herself pondering on her new single Feel Right. Produced by the highly acclaimed DOZ and featuring a verse from a rejuvenated Mafeni, this soulful song is an examination of vulnerability in relationships and within yourself, and having the courage to really tell someone how you feel.
Based on a real and turbulent relationship, Feel Right came from the moment where she simply knew that she had true and deep feelings for her partner at the time, but those feelings weren’t being reciprocated by him in the way she had wanted. Her voice smolders over DOZ’s jazzy production as she sings “I just want to love you” earnestly, leaving no doubt over the strength of her feelings. A starkly honest appearance from Mafeni plays into the theme of being vulnerable, laying his flaws out with slippery flows while playing off of SGaWD perfectly.
As with all things, the relationship that served as the inspiration for this song came to an end, and with it brought about the realization of his true character, found in the face of conflict. Despite that, Feel Right paints a hopeful picture because there’s always a chance that things can go wrong. Loving someone because it feels right is human nature, and doing so doesn’t make us foolish. At just 22, SGaWD already understands that and is able to translate it in a way we can all relate to.
