Olamide Kehinde, professionally known as Teski, is a rapidly emerging Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter. Born and raised in the vibrant metropolis of Lagos, music has always been an integral part of his life. From childhood, the sounds of iconic tracks like “Jailer” by Asa, Michael Jackson’s Thriller album, Lionel Richie, Dido, and Prince filled his home. Evoking a deep sense of nostalgia that shaped his early musical inspirations. He fondly recalls how songs like these became the foundation of his creative journey.
Reflecting on his current influences, Teski lists artists like J. Cole, Dave, Skepta, Omah Lay, Tems, Psycho YP, and Burna Boy among his favorites. Each of these acts, in their unique way, has left an imprint on his sound and style.
As Teski entered his teenage years, his older brother played a pivotal role in expanding his musical horizons. He introduced Teski to a diverse world of passionate creatives, with a distinct flair and taste. His brother’s influence opened his eyes to Nigeria’s dynamic music scene and the rise of alternative artists like Santi, Odunsi, Lady Donli, and Kida Kudz. Teski also admired the versatility of Ghanaian act Kwesi Arthur. As well as UK grime acts such as Not3s, Dave, J Hus, Little Simz, and Slowthai. These experiences deepened Teski’s appreciation for the evolving sound of global and Nigerian music. Thereby making him a fan of fresh, disruptive talent.
Teski started making music at a young age as a hobby, but soon realized he wanted to pursue it seriously. His first official single, “Rock with Me,” was produced by his older brother. Manix, who is not only a talented producer but also an integral part of Teski’s musical journey. The collaboration between the brothers helped Teski hone his craft, producing genre-defying tracks that experimented with different sounds.
One of the significant moments in Teski’s career came during his secondary school years, when he was asked to compose a song for his graduation. He approached his brother Manix, who took on the project, crafting a beat that surpassed the school’s music teacher’s initial attempt. This collaboration cemented their working relationship and marked the beginning of their musical partnership, which continues to flourish today.
While Teski doesn’t like to confine himself to any particular genre, he is most comfortable with Afrofusion and rap. The influence of UK drill is evident in tracks like “Diego Costa” and his latest release, “Naija Rap.” Teski enjoys pulling inspiration from the music he loves but is mindful of the importance of carving out a unique identity, something he believes will happen organically over time.
In 2023, Teski released his debut EP, Teski 123, a three-track project that explores familiar themes of love, authenticity, self-confidence, and resilience over Afro-pop, grime, and hip-hop-inspired beats. Of all the tracks, “Blessings” stands out for its hard-hitting bars and an unforgettable chorus. It’s a testament to Teski’s raw talent and potential, and as listeners revisit it in 2024, many consider it the best track on the EP. Teski seems poised to capitalize on his gifts, with global stardom within reach.
As 2024 unfolds, Teski’s latest release, “Naija Rap,” firmly situates him within the Nigerian drill scene. The production perfectly complements his flow, delivering a rhythmic experience that stays with you long after the track ends. The double entendres and wordplay showcase Teski’s lyrical prowess, and his collaboration with Venom adds an extra layer of intensity. The two artists bring their best, proving that Teski is on a trajectory toward greatness.
As Teski says in “Naija Rap”:
“I never even start but you see how the lyrics dey choke you for neck, with all due respect, I’m the king of this thing, I dey talk with chest.”
Indeed, Teski is just getting started, and with his talent. It’s only a matter of time before the world takes notice.
