In Mr. Onetimes’ world, consistency is written in blood and sand. Settle in for this and more on why Brainee is back.
The wide range of sounds and talents sprouting out of Africa is rapidly becoming an interesting experience for music lovers and execs across the continent. A lot of the International music community are currently basking in the warmth and wave of excitement that the Afrobeats genre oozes.
A huge chunk of this credit goes to music giants from Africa, but not without due recognition to the pack of young and talented artistes constantly doling out uncut gems. A strong and prevailing member of this pack is Brainee — Ifeanyichukwu David Onoka (Real names) fondly referred to as “Mr. Onetime” by his core and oldest fans.
The winner of the Pepsi One Mic rap competition held in 2014, is relentless about his music journey, constantly flooding social media with freestyles, covers and releases saturated with captivating lyrics and word play. As it became public knowledge that the rap culture in Nigeria compelled substantial resurrection, Brainee diversified into a savvy singer and songwriter.
His commanding resilience, one that speaks for itself once you spend a couple of hours with him or any of his social media accounts (@Braineeofficial), is unique to his personality. Brainee now publishes music under the Effizy music group imprint, which houses multiple award winning super star, “Mama Africa” Yemi Alade.
Despite the challenges faced by creatives and music performers across the globe during the pandemic, Brainee remained focused, adapted to the evolving scene and never lost focus with his core value —consistency. He boldly embraced versatility and intensified his online presence to guarantee continuous content creation and picked up new skills to facilitate the spreading of his music tentacles via TikTok.
As the curtains of 2020 finally closed, Brainee released an interesting record which shortly became the talk of the town. Fairly different from his norm, Sonting—an amapiano genre based record began to make waves on radio and viral apps like Triller and TikTok as fans jumped in on the #Sontingchallenge. Online challenges have come in handy for music artistes in recent times, but for Brainee, He’s a natural.
In a conversation with Brainee recently, I asked how it appears so easy for him to always have content to post and here’s what he had to say;
I love to create and I believe that to consciously stay in the minds of people (your fans) you have to always give them something to talk about, to think about, and to remember.
When I am not in the studio recording, it’s some other content creation process. Consistency is a principle that I live by. Almost everything about me involves learning, building and unveiling. With that, no matter how rough the journey, it appears smooth and seamless. My EP coming out later this year will reveal a lot of things about me and my story.
It is not difficult to tell that Brainee knows exactly what he wants to achieve with his music. Whilst sparking up several challenges on social media to drive his existing releases, he released a groovy, mid-tempo song, featuring Oxlade from Africa titled ‘Kpokom’. The melodious record garnered over 500,000 streams barely over one month of it’s release. Brainee didn’t stop.
Between Kpokom and his next release ‘Baby’ He teased his fans with a playful release with Josh2funny —ace comedian and pioneer of the popular #dontleavemechallenge. They call it, Y.T.G (You too good). See for yourself:
What’s new with Brainee?
In Brainee’s journey as a music artiste, there’s a striking observation that can be barely overlooked— consistency and growth. Now, he’s back with a throbbing new release which at first listen, captures the very essence of love and emotional satisfaction, a smash new hit— Baby.
Baby oozes a strong afrobeat aura for the groovy instrumental which creates a perfect sanctuary for his vocal dexterity and unfiltered lyrics. In plain description, a subtle, catchy resemblance to Starboys’ melodious style. One bar at a time and you’ll find yourself moving rhythmically to this fine record. Once again, Brainee reinstates his imprint on the colorful map of sounds from Africa.
