Radr Essentials Vol.12; Chimzy, Helen Oyeyemi and More

Happy Easter and welcome to the first monday of the new month! The new month is an exciting time to start new habits, new journeys and listen to new music. In the spirit of newness and renewing, the Radr team has put together some new music for you as well as some great books to read with them.

Music

Formula- Chimzy

This sedately paced song is perfect for a gentle vibe on the dancefloor. Chimzy’s deep pleasing vocals undulate over the love story the song tells. Chimzy is loving the formula of his love interest and wants to love up on her and bite her like a vampire. Her friends are in her ear dissuading her though and Chimzy has no choice but to continue to chase, it’s definitely a song listeners will enjoy.

World- Dangbana Republic and Bella Shmurda

On this track, the artistes sing about prophecies coming to pass. They highlight what they feel are hallmarks of the world disintegrating before their eyes. This song for them is a reaffirmation of their own beliefs, their own minds to themselves.

Peaking- Tay Iwar

Tay Iwar is a master of his pen, he weaves the most intricate stories into lyrics and wraps that around a melody like a true artist. Fans Who have  been waiting for a project from Tay for a while now will not be disappointed with peaking. In fact, it leaves us wanting more. The afro soul vibe is heavy and smooth at the same time, a pleasing listen

Body on Fire- Jess ETA & S’bling

This fast paced, afro fusion track is punctuated by reggaeton influences and amazing vocal riffs by all the artistes on this track. They sing about the seductive powers of their love interest dancing on the dancefloor. Listeners will also enjoy vibing to this on any dancefloor.

Books

Frying Plantain- Zalika Reid-Benta

The book has such an interesting title! I mean who doesn’t love fried plantain? This book is a collection of short stories all following one girl, Kara Davis who is stuck between her Jamaican heritage and her Canadian diaspora experiences. Over the course of twelve short stories we see her grow from elementary school all the way to the cusp of adulthood.

Boy, Snow, Bird- Helen Oyeyemi

Helen Oyeyemi weaves a unique yet loose retelling of the snow white fairytale. The story follows Boy Novak who leaves her hometown to start a brand new life but things are not as they seem after she gives birth to Bird. Helen charts the story of the strange connection between three women in this enchanting tale.
